Autumn Term 1 and Term 2

Our topic in Term 1 and Term 2 is:

    The Vikings!

In History, our key question will beWere the Vikings raiders or settlers?  This is the key knowledge (also known as sticky knowledge) that we will be learning:

    • I know that the Vikings came from the area where Scandinavian countries are today.
    • I know that not all Vikings were warriors, many were traders, explorers and farmers.
    • I know that Danegeld was a system where Anglo-Saxon Kings would pay the Vikings to make sure they did not attack their kingdoms.
    • I know that the Vikings carried out a violent raid on Lindisfarne Monastery.
    • I know that Vikings did not wear horns on their helmets.

    Beware of the Vikings!

We have been learning about the Viking attack on Lindisfarne Monastery in 793. First we explored what life was like for the Anglo-Saxon monks living peacefully in the monastery. We created tableaus to show their daily life.

Then we learnt about the Viking raid and how the monastery was destroyed. Our tableaus this time were very different.

Our role play inspired us to write letters to King Ethelred about the attack. Here are some examples.

Eagles joined with Buzzards to celebrate Diwali as both classes are learning about Hinduism in RE this term. We made Rangoli patterns, Diwali lamps and explored the story of Rama and Sita through dance.

Year 4 and Year 5 visited Stroud Book Festival to listen to best-selling author Piers Torday talk about his inspiration for writing, his interests in vampires and werewolves and his new book Midnight Treasure. The children even learnt what to do if they come across a wolf or a bear in the wild!

Thank-you for joining us at our Festive Fayre on Friday. The money is being counted and we will let you know how much we raised.
